How to Write the Smith Supplement 2021-2022

Smith College is a women’s liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts. There are about 2,500 undergrads, making it the largest of the Seven Sisters women colleges. Smith is part of the Five College Consortium with which students can take classes at all of them. The acceptance rate is about 31%. The supplement is short and prompts creativity, much like Smith itself.

Music means so many things to so many people. It can bring us joy, inspire us, validate us or heal us. Please tell us about a song or piece of music that is particularly meaningful to you and why. Please include the name of the song/piece and the artist.

We often tell our students that the best way to get to know a university is by its supplement. Each school has its own culture. That shines through based on what the school puts out there to attract students who are a good fit at their school. The supplement is often an indicator that a school is looking for applicants with specific interests and characteristics. This one says a lot about Smith: a laid-back school with a culture of creativity.

There’s really no wrong answer to this question. The first thing we recommend, though, is telling a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Start by thinking about how you feel when you hear whatever music of choice you’re going to talk about. Also, identify where you are when you listen to this music. The strongest answers to this question are going to give the reader a lot of context and detail. Bring the reader into the room. Set the mood and then, start playing the music. What’s meaningful about it should be implicit in your writing. If it means something to you, that will shine through. Try to answer this authentically and most importantly, have fun with it.

Given each school has a particular vibe that’s more or less evident in its supplement, if you enjoy writing a school’s supplement, it’s probably a strong fit for you. If you find yourself laboring to come up with something, consider that Smith isn’t the best fit and that’s okay. There are plenty of schools out there with distinct personalities. One of them is bound to be the perfect fit.
