How to Write the Lehigh Supplement 2021-2022

Lehigh is a private university located in rural Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. There are about 5,100 undergrads and an acceptance rate of 32%. Lehigh offers a wide array of academics and popular majors include Finance and Mechanical Engineering. Below are some tips for tackling the Lehigh supplement:

How did you first learn about Lehigh University and what motivated you to apply? (150-word limit)

Okay, this is an uncommon question, and guess what? It’s not a big deal. We think this one is more for their marketing purposes than anything else. You can hear about a college a lot of ways. Just answer the question honestly.

A compelling characteristic of Lehigh’s community is that our students want to be actively engaged in their learning, their community, and the world. Our students look to make a difference and have a real-world impact. We expect our community to challenge your viewpoint, your naturalized assumptions, and the way that you see the world around you. Lehigh University is committed to being an anti-racist institution. By this, we mean actively speaking out and addressing acts of racism, racist comments, racist practices, policies, and procedures.

What would you want to be different in your own country or community to respond to issues of inequality, inequity, or injustice? (300-word limit)

Ok, there are two ways to answer this question as we see it. Option one is to pontificate about a world that doesn’t exist and discuss ideas that are young and idealistic, along with creative solutions. The other is to say things that exist in our world now that could actually make a difference. We would probably go with the second, especially if you’re someone who’s read-in on politics. In the beginning of your response, acknowledge that this country has myriad issues when it comes to inequality, inequity, and injustice but you think X solution might be an effective and obvious start. First, start with a really specific issue. “Racism” broadly speaking is a big issue to tackle in just 300 words. Instead, hone in on something more narrow. Housing discrimination and school segregation might be more manageable here and they’re still huge, complex issues involving systemic racism. Get specific.

In terms of your solution, X could be anything currently underway in the political sphere that works here: an end to gerrymandering, expanding the Supreme Court, the regulation of Facebook, the creation of a liberal superpac that buys out and shuts down Fox News…know what you’re talking about and write an answer about something that interests you. We want all our kids to write stories—we think it’s the way to get ahead among a sea of applicants. Your response to this prompt should be no exception.

The Lehigh supplement is a unique one and there are many ways one could tackle it. The most important thing to keep in mind is to be specific and passionate.
